Do I need a license to show a movie?
Yes. For any public exhibition of a movie (outside of a private home), you are required by law to obtain a public performance license. This applies regardless of whether you charge admission or if you are a non-profit organization.
Rural Cinema Productions provides the equipment and technical services, but we cannot obtain the license for you. The license must be secured by the event host/venue.
Most major studio films can be licensed through Swank or Criterion. Prices typically range from $250-$500 depending on the title and audience size.
We recommend booking 2-4 weeks in advance for best availability, especially for weekend events during peak season (May-September). However, we can often accommodate last-minute requests.
All packages include complete professional setup, testing, and teardown. We arrive early to ensure everything is perfect before your event starts.
We provide the playback equipment (Apple TV, Blu-ray, etc.), but we do not provide the movie content or the license. You must provide the movie media (Blu-ray disc or digital file) and secure the necessary public performance license.
We monitor weather closely and work with you on contingency plans. Rain dates can be discussed when booking. Our equipment is weather-resistant but not waterproof and cannot be operated in active rain or high winds.
Our standard rental is per day/event. Multi-day events and extended rentals are available - contact us for custom pricing.
Most setups require 2-3 standard 110V outlets with 15-20 amp circuits. We bring all necessary power distribution and extension cords. If power is not available at the site, we can provide a generator for an additional fee.
